Carolyn Sue Carey (Chestney)

Carolyn Sue Chestney formerly of Bloomington, died Saturday morning (Nov. 6, 2010) at Medora.  She died unexpectedly at the age of 67.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Gent Funeral Home, Alton, where her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday.  The Rev. Don E. Long Jr will officiate.  Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Godfrey First United Methodist Church prayer garden, 1100 Airport Road, Godfrey, IL 62035.

She was born Sept. 22, 1943, in Paris, Il., the daughter of Allen and Sarah Glick Carey, Fort Meyers, Fl.  The family moved to Bloomington where Carolyn graduated from Bloomington High School in 1961.  During her high school years, she was a candy striper at the hospital and was also a lifeguard at the public swimming pool.  After high school, she attended Bradley University at Peoria and graduated from the registered nursing program in 1964.  Later that year, Carolyn married James K. Chestney. 

Carolyn returned to college for a second degree, earning a B.S. in nursing in 1986 from McKendree College at Lebanon.  She worked at Wood River Community Hospital for 22 years.  She then worked for Preferred Health and did home nursing until retiring in 1999.

Carolyn is survived by her mother and father; her husband, James K. Chestney,  three sons, James A. (Kim) Chestney, Medora, and their children, Ryan, Jordan and James D.; Jeffrey (Myrt) Chestney, Pensacola, Fl, and their children, Brandon, Alex, Tucker and Emma; and Robert (Kim) Chestney, Godfrey, and their children, Hobbie, Erin and Justin; one daughter, Carey (Chad) Cox, Alton, and their children, Amanda, Jenna, Gracie and Lauren; and her sister, Cindy (Chuck) Freed.

Sheila Hepworth

 The reunion will come and we won't get to see Carolyn. It saddened me to me to hear of her  passing so soon.  Sheila Hepworth
