Attended S.I.U on a athletic scholarship. Quickly discovered there was very little relationship between the two words("athletic" and "scholarship" at S.I.U during that time frame). S.I.U was a non-conference affiliated Division 1 sport factory in the 1960's and I must admit I loved competing for them and at that level of competition. We finished 6th in 1962 and 4th in 1964 in the NCAA Division 1 finals as a team. 1964 was also a good year for me as a individual, losing only once 3-2 to a athlete from Japan who was a NCAA Division 1 champion. I was invited to the final trials in 1964 but did not go due to a knee injury/surgery. I was voted team captain my final year of collegiate competition.
